Description

Another World chronicles the story of a man hurtled through space and time by a nuclear experiment gone wrong. You assume the role of Lester Knight Chaykin, a young physicist. You’ll need to dodge, outwit, and overcome a host of alien monsters and deadly earthquakes that plague the alien landscape you now call home. Only a perfect blend of logic and skill will get you past the deadly obstacles that lie in waiting.

In the 20th Anniversary Edition, apart from a remastered version of the game, you will find a 20 minutes long “making of” video of Another World, the technical handbook, the development diary and the soundtrack remixed by the original composer JF Freitas.

Get ready for an adventure out of this world.

  • A true icon amongst platformers and one of the most memorable games of all time
  • Challenging gameplay centered around survival, with a very strong cinematic feel
  • Reflex and timing-based action sequences mixed with orientation-based puzzles

What I mostly like are certain artful creations that captivate you against your will, make you forget everything that is around and transport you to… Well… Another World. Not many games are so aptly named. From its introduction to its conclusion, Eric Chahi’s masterpiece uses its technical limitations as a strength.

The mellow yet contrasting colors and limited amount of details brings credible depth and arouse curiosity in this unknown planet. The coarse sound effects and sparse dialogue reinforce the alienness of the whole experience, while the absolute lack of information given completes the feeling of being lost, a stranger in a strange land.

Yet, its straight forward scenario hurls you in a desperate flight for your life, never releasing the tension until the end,. And honestly, through its excellent and diverse mechanics, once I managed to figure out the solution to a puzzle, the level design often just made me go “wow, that’s so smart”. Try an important piece of video game history: kick back, relax, and travel to Another World.
